Romans 1:9:

“God Whom I serve with my whole heart in preaching the gospel of His Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you...” (NIV)

It is the God of all creation, the One and Only, Whom Paul is serving, gladly preaching Jesus Christ, His Son, as Savior and Lord. And it is in His name that Paul’s heart reaches out to the Romans and to believers worldwide.

Paul displays the true missionary spirit. By example, he shows us that a Christian missionary is endowed, empowered and compelled by the Holy Spirit. His purpose is to bear witness to Christ, In Acts 1:8, we read, where Jesus had said to His disciples, just before being taken up to heaven as they watched, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” True Christian ministry is ministry in the Spirit.

It was important to Paul that the Romans realize his keen interest in their spiritual welfare. He prayed for them constantly. He expressed his sincere desire to see them in person so that he might share with them firsthand. We need to be aware and to practice the importance of praying daily for those whom we are concerned over, near or far, relatives, friends, or strangers.

Paul’s example to us, today, was one of reaching out, not holding back, and doing so boldly, in the power of the Holy Spirit. In 2 Timothy 1:3, we read where Paul wrote, “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.”
